Fall Travel Tips: Making the Most of the Season

Do you plan to travel over the fall season? Autumn is one of my favorite times to travel. The vibrant colors of the changing leaves enhance the beautiful landscapes.

This is the Upper Tahquamenon Falls in Michigan. The morning was cold and foggy.

Here are some of my fall travel tips to help you make the most of the season.

I love the changing leaves.
  1. Plan Around Fall Foliage: Research peak foliage times in the area you’re visiting. Popular destinations like New England, the Smoky Mountains, and the Pacific Northwest have stunning fall colors. Personally, I travel around Michigan especially the Upper Peninsula. Everything is stunning during the fall season.
  2. Book Accommodations Early: Fall is a popular time for travel, especially in scenic areas. Book your lodging early to secure the best rates and availability.
  3. Layer Your Clothing: Fall weather can be unpredictable, with chilly mornings and warm afternoons. Pack layers, including a lightweight jacket, sweaters, and a scarf. And, remember to bring your umbrella.
  4. Check Local Events: Many towns and cities host fall festivals, apple picking, pumpkin patches, and wine tastings. There is also pumpkin weigh offs, town decoration contests, and much more. Look up local events to add unique experiences to your trip.
  5. Avoid Tourist Crowds: Consider traveling to less popular destinations. Visit well-known spots during the week instead of weekends. This will help you avoid crowds.
  6. Try Fall Flavors: Seek out local seasonal foods like pumpkin, apple cider, and hearty soups. Many regions have special dishes that are perfect for the season. Cider slushies and pumpkin donuts are a fall favorite for me.
  7. Be Prepared for Shorter Days: Days get shorter in the fall, so plan your outdoor activities accordingly. Start early to maximize daylight hours.
  8. Stay Hydrated: As the weather cools, it’s easy to forget to drink water. I mention this because drinking enough water a day is my downfall. Keep a water bottle with you to stay hydrated. This is especially important if you are doing a lot of hiking or outdoor activities.
  9. Capture the Scenery: Fall landscapes are perfect for photography. I love photographing nature in the fall. The birds gather, the leaves change, and the scenery is spectacular. Bring a good camera or make sure your phone is ready to capture the vibrant colors and unique lighting.
  10. Consider Travel Insurance: Weather can be unpredictable in the fall, leading to flight delays or cancellations. Travel insurance can offer peace of mind if things do not go as planned. I admit I am more of a land traveler. I like to view different scenery and local attractions. But definitely check into travel insurance if you plan to fly.

Remember, have fun! Happy Travels!
