Essential Tips for Your Fall Travel Bucket List

Are you trying to figure out where to go this fall season? Starting now through the holidays, local events, fairs, festivals, and other community activities provide lots to see and do. Creating a bucket list for local and far way activities is perfect to get the most from the season. Consider the following tips to help you create a fall travel bucket list that feels inspiring but also doable.

Fall in Michigan is my favorite!
  1. Start with the Season’s Magic
  • Think about what fall means to you. For me, I think of crisp air, cozy sweaters, colorful leaves, pumpkin spice, or spooky fun.
  • Add experiences that highlight those feelings. For example, I live near apple orchards and cider mills. I like apple picking, finding the perfect pumpkin, and sampling cider slushies. But I also enjoy hiking a colorful trail. The closer to Halloween, visiting a haunted attraction is a must.

2. Mix Big & Small Adventures

  • Include both local day trips and longer getaways on your bucket list.  For example, a scenic drive through fall foliage near home is a great local tourist option. Then I plan a weekend trip to a charming autumn town.
  • Local and longer trips keep your list flexible depending on your budget and schedule.

 3. Choose Seasonal Destinations

  • Research the best fall spots in your region. For example, check out fall festivals in your hometown or surrounding areas.
  • Add iconic destinations further away if you want a bigger trip.
Tahquamenon Falls in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The state park is beautiful all year around but fall is my favorite.

4. Focus on Experiences, Not Just Places

  • Instead of only listing locations, include activities like:
    • Go on a hayride under the stars. Close to Halloween many places offer haunted hayrides and corn maze activities.
    • Try a new fall soup or dessert at a local festival.
    • Go hiking to a waterfall surrounded by autumn colors. Here in Michigan, I love visiting Tahquamenon Falls.
    • Take a scenic train ride in the fall to see the colorful landscape. I admit I love trains.

 5. Build in Memory-Making

  • Add goals like taking family photos in the leaves, journaling each trip, or collecting a small memento. Use pressed leaves, postcards, or travel snaps to create a scrapbook.
Sea Shell City is definitely a tourist trap. But I love going there. These types of gift shops are my favorite.

6. Keep Comfort in Mind

  • Pack for layers since fall weather can change quickly. Here in Michigan, I can start with a winter jacket in the morning. Then put shorts on by the afternoon.
  • Add cozy downtime stops to your list. Visit independently owned coffee shops, boutiques, and yes, tourist traps. For longer trips, stay in a cabin with a fire pit or hot tub.

 7. Write It Out Creatively

  • When making your bucket list, use a travel journal, smash journal, or even a fall-themed vision board. I love creating vision boards with possible destinations.
  • Checking items off will feel rewarding and make the season feel fuller.

Have fun! Enjoy creating your fall season bucket list! What is at the top of your list to see and do?
