Discover Tahquamenon Falls: Michigan’s Fall Colors

Are you searching for something to do in Michigan? A weekend getaway? Visiting Tahquamenon Falls in the fall is a magical experience. The falls are framed by golden and fiery red trees. They are some of Michigan’s most iconic autumn views. I admit, Tahquamenon Falls is one of my favorite Michigan road trip destinations. If you are planning to go,  here are some tips to make the most of your trip.

On my last trip, the weather was not the best. It was a rainy day. But I still enjoyed watching the falls.

Timing Your Visit

  • Peak Color: Colors typically peak from late September to mid-October, depending on weather. Check Michigan’s fall color reports before you go. The entire area is beautiful this time of year.
  • Early Morning / Late Afternoon: Arrive early or stay late for softer light, fewer crowds, and gorgeous photos. Sunrise through mist is especially beautiful.

Getting There & Around

  • Upper Falls: The more powerful and famous waterfall, with several observation platforms.
  • Lower Falls: A series of smaller cascades you can get closer to—great for families and photographers.
  • Trail Between Falls: A 4-mile trail (one way) through hardwood forest connects the Upper and Lower Falls. The trail is definitely a hike but worth every step.

 Best Experiences in Fall

  • Scenic Views: The mix of maples, oaks, and birches makes for a stunning color contrast. This is set against the rushing brownish “root beer” water. The color comes from tannins from cedar swamps.
  • Photography: Bring a tripod for long exposure shots. Polarizing filters help with glare from the water.
  • Picnicking: Pack a thermos of cider or hot cocoa for a fall picnic at one of the park tables.
I always find something to photograph. There were plenty of mushrooms lining the trails.

 Hiking Tips

  • Wear sturdy shoes—trails and boardwalks can get slippery with wet leaves.
  • Dress in layers; mornings can be frosty, afternoons mild.
  • Bring a rain coat or poncho.
  • Bring bug spray just in case. The bugs are lighter in fall, but you may still encounter some pesky insects.

Wildlife & Nature

  • Watch for deer, eagles, and migrating birds.
  • The quieter fall season makes wildlife spotting easier than in summer.
Whitefish Point is another one of my favorite destinations in Michigan.

Nearby Stops

  • Tahquamenon Falls Brewery & Pub: The pub is located near the Upper Falls entrance. It is perfect for warming up with local food and a craft beer. I personally have not been to this place yet. But I plan to visit the next time I am at the park.
  • Whitefish Point & Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum: Another one of my favorite destinations. Whitefish Point is just 20 minutes away, with incredible Lake Superior views and maritime history.

Take your time. Explore the park. Visit the falls. Take lots of photos and enjoy!
